Australian university entrance not merit based

Posted in: 한국어 연습

This will be a gradual post, probably for nobody’s benefit but my own, I’m taking it a paragraph at a time to hone my translation skills (but mostly because my Korean is fairly average and my brain only absorbs so many new words in a single session).

Disclaimer: I think I am fairly close to the meaning behind the original text though I am aware this does not extrapolate in many cases into a direct translation of the original words. If anyone has a better idea of what is going on in the text (my comprehension is likely tenuous at best) please do comment and let me know, I’m trying to learn through all this.

호주대학 입학은 성적순이 아니다.

호주정부가 대학 등록금 자비부담을 희망하는 입학 지원자에 대한 대입 성적 커트라인 설정에 제 역할을 하지못하고 있다고 연방야당인 노동당이 정면으로 비난하고나섰다.

Australian university entrance is not based on merit.

The [Australian] government holds that university applicants should be individually responsible for the cost of their tuition and that pre-established Korean university merits cannot play a role in the price of university tuition for applicants [to Australian universities], a position which has been publically criticised by the opposition Labour Party.
